What is a T-bone accident?

T-bone accidents, also known as side-impact collisions, are one of the most dangerous types of car accidents on the road. These collisions typically occur when one vehicle strikes another directly from the side, forming a “T” shape.

In addition to property damage, T-bone accidents can lead to severe injuries, especially for occupants on the side of the impacted vehicle. Common injuries include fractures, head injuries, spinal cord injuries and soft tissue injuries.

Causes of T-bone crashes

One of the primary causes of T-bone collisions is the failure to obey traffic signals. When a driver disregards a red light or stop sign at an intersection, they risk colliding with cross-traffic vehicles, resulting in a T-bone collision. The following additional influences often play roles in T-bone crashes:

  • Failure to yield the right-of-way: This often happens at intersections with no traffic signals or stop signs. This can occur when making a left turn or entering a road from a side street.
  • Distracted driving: Distractions such as texting, talking on the phone, adjusting the radio or eating while driving can divert a driver’s attention from the road. This reduces their reaction time and increases the likelihood of failing to notice oncoming traffic.
  • Speeding: Speeding not only reduces a driver’s ability to stop in time to avoid a crash but also increases the severity of the impact in case of a collision. When speeding vehicles collide with each other at intersections, the results can be catastrophic.

T-bone accidents are hazardous but often preventable. By understanding their causes, consequences and taking preventive measures, drivers can reduce the risk of being involved in these potentially life-threatening collisions. Additionally, such knowledge can help motorists who have been harmed by another’s negligence or recklessness hold these parties accountable more easily and effectively.
