What are the signs of a head injury after a wreck?

A head injury is one of the most common injuries that you can sustain following a car accident. Depending on the severity of the impact, head injuries may vary from minor concussions to life-threatening injuries.

Head injuries can be life-altering especially if they are not treated in time. As such, it goes without saying that prompt diagnosis is key to proper and effective treatment of your injury.

Warning signs of a brain injury after a car accident

Unlike other accident-related injuries like cuts, lacerations and broken bones, head injuries can be difficult to detect immediately after the accident. This is especially true if you do not know the signs and symptoms.

Here are some of the signs you need to look out for if you suspect head injury after a car wreck:

  • Loss of consciousness: This is perhaps the most common sign of head injury after a car accident. This usually happens when you strike your head against the steering wheel, car body or windshield.
  • Nausea: Even if you do not pass out following the head injury, you may feel nauseous and vomit occasionally. You may also develop sensitivity to light
  • Confusion and loss of memory: You may not realize this immediately after the crash, but if you are struggling to put your memory together or are confusing otherwise obvious life events and dates, then chances are you sustained a brain injury during the crash.

Filing your claim

If you sustain injury to your head or any other injury following a car accident, it is important that you file your claim within the statute of limitations period. In Kentucky, you have one year from the date of the accident to file a personal injury lawsuit against the liable party.

A car accident can leave you with all manner of injuries. Knowing your legal options can help you pursue the compensation you deserve for your injuries and other damages.
