How road rage causes preventable collisions

Most drivers have experienced intense emotions in traffic at one time or another. They become angry when another driver cuts them off or does something obviously unsafe on the road. Occasionally, people let those emotional reactions dictate their behavior. Road rage occurs when a driver succumbs to intense anger due to traffic and acts out toward other people. Road rage sometimes leads to physical assaults or violent crimes. It can also cause collisions.

How do angry drivers contribute to crash risk?

Aggressive maneuvers can cause collisions

Frequently, road rage manifests as misconduct in traffic. A road rage motorist may tailgate another driver because they drive too slowly or refuse to let another motorist pass them.

Road rage drivers might also intentionally cut others off or swerve into their lane in retaliation, which can lead to preventable collisions. Aggressive behavior in traffic can lead to completely preventable wrecks.

Angry drivers can cause distraction

Sometimes, road rage drivers don’t hit others in traffic. Instead, they create distractions that cause crashes involving other vehicles. A driver trying to avoid a road rage driver swerving at them in traffic might cross into another lane without checking and hit someone else.

Someone trying to avoid a driver who just cut them off could also sideswipe another vehicle. Even the visual distraction of watching a road rage driver act out could result in another motorist failing to monitor other aspects of traffic and causing a crash.

When road raging motorists cause serious collisions, they are often liable for the harm their emotional outbursts cause others. Reporting an injurious incident to the police and evaluating options for requesting compensation can be smart decisions for those harmed by a road rage driver.
